Massachusetts Special Election 2010 – Update

The 2010 United States Senate special election in Massachusetts will take place on January 19, 2010, with a party primary election on December 8, 2009.

Democratic candidates
- Mike Capuano, Representative for the 8th district, announced his candidacy on September 18, 2009.
- Martha Coakley, Massachusetts Attorney General, announced her candidacy on September 3, 2009.
- Alan Khazei, co-founder and former CEO of City Year, announced his candidacy on September 24, 2009.
- Stephen Pagliuca announced his candiacy on September 17, 2009

Republican candidates
- Scott P. Brown, State Senator from Wrentham, announced his candidacy on September 12, 2009.
- Bob Burr, Canton selectman, announced his candidacy on September 7, 2009.

United Nations Security Council: Abolish ‘permanent’ members?

In recent General Debate of the 64th Session, a number of member states have called for abolition of ‘permanent’ members of the security council, citing it is unfair to have only a few nations with power of veto — which has been the case since the formation of the UN at the close of the Second World War. Should these positions be abolished? Should all countries be equal in the United Nations?

A dust storm swept across eastern Australia and blanketed Sydney on Wednesday, disrupting transport, placing health authorities on alert for widespread respiratory illness and stripping thousands of tonnes of topsoil off Australia’s main farmlands.
Is this a direct result of Climate Change, or just a random severe weather event?

TEHRAN — Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the Holocaust was a “myth” as he addressed the annual Quds Day rally in Tehran on Friday, reiterating comments that sparked outrage around the world.
The United States, Britain, France and Germany all issued statements slamming his latest outburst – only the latest in a string of outspoken statements. Is he trying to keep attention away from growing unrest in Iran?
