given that some 30+ states have reciprocity with florida at the moment, how is the FBI actually showing a lowered crime rate?

the problem with selectively quoting statistics is its as dangeorus as selectively quoting the Bible – you can make it seem like God supports any kind of evil bigotry. Violent crime has been falling dramatically throughout the US regardless of gun laws so its hard to relate a specific fall to particular laws. There are greater demographic forces as work. But anyway why would one want to own a gun. Who looks forward to taking life?

Kimberly- here are the FBI stats from 2005. http://newsbusters.org/node/9140
I don’t know any one with whom I shoot that “looks fwd” to taking a life…I hope that’s not what you think that somehow owning a gun is akin to being a murderer!
23% decrease in crime is a pretty big difference and it’s also very sensible to think that if you are a … See More

and right to bear arms is something that is enshrined not only in our constitution but in english common law and was something supported as far back as Cicero (in fact, BY cicero).

i have no issue with the second amendment on its face, but i would like to very much return to a time of mandatory training/hunter certification laws. most americans live in an urban setting these days, and such dense environments invite chaos if not properly maintained.

You know the consitution was written hundreds of years ago by a bunch of guys reacting to their times. Slavey was cool then, homosexuals were evil, adulterers were criminals, debtors went to prison, indigenous people had no votes etc. There is nothing magical in upholding customs once they no longer reflect social norms. And yes I think guns are only created to kill things so if you own one you must have the intent to kill. No?

a very good point: my dad once told me that if i did not intend to shoot to kill, to not buy the pretty little winchester with hollow points that i had my eye on. i was thinking that i could get away with kneecapping an intruder. so, machete it is

Was written by some incredibly smart people who had studied their history and incorporated the lessons thereof into the document that became the foundation for the freest nation ever established. They determined that the right to bear arms was important enough to be the 2nd amendment. Whatever else they thought might be an indication of the … See More

Kyle – that is so ignorant it’s sad. I own two guns. I don’t intend to use them unless someone threatens my family. I also have a green belt in karate (collective ooh and ahh) but I don’t intend to chop anyone unless the same. I have twice in my life (and when I was in MUCH better shape) used martial arts – first in self defense. Second to … See More

Martial arts and guns are two TOTALLY different things. Martial arts are based on ancient techniques of self defense! Guns are a product that is created to kill point blank! Please tell me what an assault rifle is for??

So if we post one more comment we will have 20 which is a good run. I am going to retire and agree to differ. My father was a Methodist minister as was my grandfather so I was brought up in a Church household and thus the anti-gun view is seared into my consciousness.

its not ignorant its the truth! No, you may not go holdup a liquor store, but if you were upset or someone was God forbid breaking into your house, you would kill them! Even if they were unarmed. You are an exception no the rule. Idiots do not need to go to a Florida pawnshop and buy guns.

michael, i can see both sides of the argument, especially if you’re a fourth-generation hunter. too many people these days treat guns as toys, though, which is where i draw the line. i say the NRA ought to close those obvious halfbaked gun show loopholes, we make guns and ammo a bit more difficult to obtain, and then mandate actual certification courses. otherwise they’re accidents waiting to happen.

Ok Michael. I can respect that.
Kyle – i love you man but I can’t explain. Talk to other friends who are gun owners. Drop by a shooting range. It might alter your judgement.
Kimberly – I am always wary of statements like, “too many people treat guns as toys…” Do they? Who? I have never met a gun-owner who treats it like a toy. Just the … See More

Many people who own guns and the term own is used loosely because many guns are ‘bought’ illegally use them to kill other people! (FACT) I agree that people have the right to defend themselves and their homes and families, the problem I have is that some people overract (Police Officers included) to situations and guns only add to the confusion. Guns are meant to kill (FACT). “Thou shall not kill” its in the BIBLE which predates the constitution!

in my experience, and only IMHO: having lived in the bahamas, florida, north carolina, new york and california, i can heartily affirm that i have met way too many people who drink and hunt at the same time. i have also met way too many people who collect guns as a hobby, who haven’t the first clue as to how to operate them. and at the few gun … See More

I can respect anyone’s rejection of killing on religious grounds. Truth be told, I don’t even know if I could kill even if my family was in jeopardy but I reserve the right to if I am threatened. So I’m glad we all agree on that (whew!)
I am against illegal sales of guns. I don’t believe banning them altogether is going to cure this problem. … See More

What would a person do with an assault rifle? I think we agree that peoples interest (self) is out front as opposed to some back-room politics!

ok one more comment. In moments of anger people who are universally good people with unblemished records do snap and shoot their loved ones over and over again – if a gun is there. Guns make it easy to have a lapse of judgement so suck good people into killing. You have to be a lot more hardcore to stab someone.

michael – are you speaking from experience? ![]()
sure, this does happen. people with previous felonious behavior can’t get a gun legally in this country. but i’m not going to disarm everyone just to insure against the behavior of a few. Some people watch porn and go rape and kill people. Should we ban porn because of a few a-holes?
I agree Kyle… See More

in my personal experience when a gun is on hand it changes all interactions and usualy creates a negative reaction. A few times I have wished I had a gun when having one waved in my face but in retrospect not having one saved anyone being killed.

I have to agree with Michael that guns create an atmosphere of negativity, of flase bravado if you will, if you pull it out you must use it! What happened to the good old days of a fist fight? While a universal ban on guns might not happen, there are so many ways to get them illegally, it may help deter accidental deaths, murders and domestic violence that is plaguing our society. You need target practice to practice what exactly?
