Should US revoke right of American citizenship to foreigners born here?

Friday, July 30th, 2010

A new Politics/Elections poll has been created.

A bill in the House of Representatives would change the 14th amendment to the US Constitution that grants anyone who is born on US soil the right of American citizenship. Efforts to revoke birthright citizenship could make it the new flashpoint in the debate over immigration. The bill, if passed, would bring the US more into line with current European birthright policies. But in the wake of the controversy over Arizona’s new immigration policy, any changes to the 14th amendment would likely become another flashpoint in the debate over illegal immigrants. What do you think?

Australia Federal Election August 21st
Australia goes to the polls to elect a new leader on Saturday August 21st. Australia’s first female PM Julia Gillard, leader of the Australian Labor Party, who ousted Kevin Rudd, has called the election to seek a mandate to govern in her own right. Tony Abbot who leads the Liberal/National Coalition is fighting to be PM. Australia does not have direct presidential style elections so leader of the party with most seats in the lower house becomes PM. Which party gets your vote? Vote here.

Election Preview: (from ABC)
It is only three years since Kevin Rudd led Labor to victory at the 2007 election, but the pace of events in recent months makes it seem further ago in time. Who could have predicted three years ago that the 2010 election would be fought between Labor’s second Prime Minister Julia Gillard, and third-turn Liberal Leader Tony Abbott? Indeed, who would have predicted this turn of events twelve months ago when Kevin Rudd had a commanding opinion poll lead over Malcolm Turnbull? The pace of leadership change in the last three years has been breath taking. Labor’s sweep to victory in 2007 was historic. It came after the Howard government had twice bucked the usual rule of Australian politics for governments to lose support over time. The Coalition’s vote and parliamentary majority increased at both the 2001 and 2004 elections, the latter election seeing Labor’s support collapse in critical mortgage belt seats. The 2004 result left the Labor Party needing a swing of 5% to achieve government at the 2007 election. Read the full article here.

Belgium – Two Countries?

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

A new Politics/Elections poll has been created.

Belgium is holding parliamentary elections which could bring the country closer to a constitutional split. The Flemish separatist party, the New Flemish Alliance (NVA), is expected to do well in the vote. Belgium is in effect two separate communities held together by a bi-lingual political system: 4 million French speakers in Wallonia, 6.5 million Dutch speakers in Flanders for a total of just 7.7 million voters. What do you think – would you support a vote for two separate countries? Vote in the poll here.

From the BBC at 01:02 GMT, Monday, 14 June 2010: Belgium’s Flemish separatist party, the New Flemish Alliance (NVA), has emerged as the largest force in parliament, near-complete election results show. The NVA took 27 seats in the 150-member assembly, bringing the country closer to a split. The party, led by Bart De Wever, wants to more fully divide the country between Dutch-speaking Flanders and French-speaking Wallonia. But the NVA would have to form a coalition with Wallonian parties. Click here for full article.

President Obama email re Gulf Coast Oil Spill June 5th, 2010

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Friend –

Yesterday, I visited Caminada Bay in Grand Isle, Louisiana — one of the first places to feel the devastation wrought by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. While I was here, at Camerdelle’s Live Bait shop, I met with a group of local residents and small business owners.

Folks like Floyd Lasseigne, a fourth-generation oyster fisherman. This is the time of year when he ordinarily earns a lot of his income. But his oyster bed has likely been destroyed by the spill.

Terry Vegas had a similar story. He quit the 8th grade to become a shrimper with his grandfather. Ever since, he’s earned his living during shrimping season — working long, grueling days so that he could earn enough money to support himself year-round. But today, the waters where he has worked are closed. And every day, as the spill worsens, he loses hope that he will be able to return to the life he built.

Here, this spill has not just damaged livelihoods. It has upended whole communities. And the fury people feel is not just about the money they have lost. It is about the wrenching recognition that this time their lives may never be the same.

These people work hard. They meet their responsibilities. But now because of a manmade catastrophe — one that is not their fault and beyond their control — their lives have been thrown into turmoil. It is brutally unfair. And what I told these men and women is that I will stand with the people of the Gulf Coast until they are again made whole.

That is why, from the beginning, we have worked to deploy every tool at our disposal to respond to this crisis. Today, there are more than 20,000 people working around the clock to contain and clean up this spill. I have authorized 17,500 National Guard troops to participate in the response. More than 1,900 vessels are aiding in the containment and cleanup effort. We have convened hundreds of top scientists and engineers from around the world. This is the largest response to an environmental disaster of this kind in the history of our country.

We have also ordered BP to pay economic injury claims, and this week, the federal government sent BP a preliminary bill for $69 million to pay back American taxpayers for some of the costs of the response so far. In addition, after an emergency safety review, we are putting in place aggressive new operating standards for offshore drilling. And I have appointed a bipartisan commission to look into the causes of this spill. If laws are inadequate, they will be changed. If oversight was lacking, it will be strengthened. And if laws were broken, those responsible will be brought to justice.

These are hard times in Louisiana and across the Gulf Coast, an area that has already seen more than its fair share of troubles. The people of this region have met this terrible catastrophe with seemingly boundless strength and character in defense of their way of life. What we owe them is a commitment by our nation to match the resilience they have shown. That is our mission. And it is one we will fulfill.

Thank you,

President Barack Obama

Poll Results on GOP Presidential Candidate for 2012

Friday, June 4th, 2010

We have two polls running on the potential race to be GOP Presidential nominee for 2012. One poll is Do you support Sarah Palin as GOP nominee for Presidential candidate in 2012? (Click to see poll or VOTE in it) in which Sarah Palin gets the approval of 48% of those polled (circa 1900 votes so far) and 44% disapprove. 86% of the votes are from the US. So this seems to augur well for the Palin campaign.

However in our more general poll 2012 U.S. Election Poll (Click to see poll or VOTE in it) Palin is number 3 with 5% of the vote behind Mitt Romney on 60% and Ron Paul on 10%. Votes are 80% from the US. However this poll has less votes recorded – 243 – and we suspect there has been an organized campaign to get the Romney numbers up because most votes for him were cast in a period of a few consectuive days.
